How’s Your Serve?

Introduction

This post is the thirty-eighth part of a ramble-rant about the software business. The current posts in this series can be found on the series landing page.

This post is about serving others.

Chief Servant Officer

My next job title is going to be CSO (Chief Servant Officer). I’m going to serve the people I lead, the people who work for me in any capacity, and the people for whom we do the work. I’m going to serve people who need any kind of help I can provide. I’m going to serve people I don’t know. I’m going to serve people who choose to compete with me when they could be coopertition instead.

Conclusion

I Am Here To Help™.

How about you? How’s your serve?

I think this attitude is sometimes missing in the database world.
Sometimes database professionals treat data as a precious resource to be locked up and protected, instead of fuel for business processes.

  2. Andy,
Early in my career I was taught a simple maxim, "Everybody between me and the ultimate end user is my customer and I am here to serve my customers and make their lives easier, even if it makes my life more difficult."
I have yet to be employed by a company whose sole purpose was to support their IT department.  Every place I have been employed, the purpose of the IT department was to support the business activities.
