“It’s Not You, it’s Me”

I’ve been asked by a couple people to run for the PASS Board of Directors. I appreciate their confidence in me (both of you!). I’ve considered running for the PASS Board and for the Nominations Committee, but I’m not going to run. Why?

  1. If I somehow survived the Nomination Committee process, was added to the proposed slate of candidates, that slate was approved by the PASS Board, and I was then somehow elected; I don’t believe I would accomplish much as a PASS Board member. Experience indicates others are simply better at communicating ideas successfully to the PASS organization’s leadership. I have the utmost confidence in them.
  2. I enjoy interviewing the PASS Board candidates. I don’t think it would be appropriate to participate as an applicant and interview my peers. I trust I would do nothing different, but the potential for even the appearance of impropriety would be reason enough to forego the interviews.
  3. I really enjoy working with Brian Moran (@briancmoran) and Matt Velic (Blog | @mvelic | SQLPeople) at SQLPeople. I don’t consider SQLPeople to be in competition with PASS, but there is overlap in that we both participate in SQL Server Community events. While I trust that I would do nothing different, there is (again) the potential for the appearance of impropriety.
  4. Perhaps most important: I believe I serve both PASS and the SQL Server Community best right here at the keyboard typing blog posts, writing articles and books, serving as a community mentor, supporting events, and discussing the SQL Server Community and PASS with others.
